The act was passed in order to protect the dairy industry and consumers, out of fear that oleomargarine might be substituted for butter without the consumersโ knowledge. It became only the third federally taxed product in the U.S. after it passed, on August 2nd 1886.

Perhaps the first image is more curious though, in it you will see the word โbutterineโ on the second line of the invoice. Butterine, or oleomargarine, was the name for margarine prior to the prior to the Oleomargarine Act of 1886.
