The recent days and weeks have shown that, notwithstanding the huge impediments placed in the path of multi partisan politics in Zambia in the past three years, Zambia and Zambians are determined to remain a multi party democracy.

In the past three years, we often heard retorts of ‘there’s no opposition’ and those of us who warned that ‘the opposition are the people’ became near lone voices. I remember saying to some ruling party pundits in the last one year, that “ the real problem is not that there is no opposition, but, that for the first time in the history of Zambia, the ruling party does not know the Presidential opponent two years to an election”, I was laughed off. There is a reason why even despotic regimes allow a semblance of real opposition party activity - to prevent opposition organisation becoming vague until the last minute. Exactly what happened here.

No matter what the result of the elections on 13th August is, Zambia shall emerge a stronger multi party democracy than it has been in the past 3 years - and we must keep it that way. No leader or party should ever bet on the absence of an opposition in Zambia. We will always have a strong opposition because we are diverse and a section of the population, no matter how large or small, will always be the opposition. The leader they choose, is but their figure head, for the moment.
