World Cup will have hydration breaks each 15 min to reduce dangerous heat risk. Remember, this is not a FIFA rule softening the efforts of the players. It is because we are heating the planet to new unprecedented levels. We are breaking game.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
Breaking: New study using observational constraints projects that the Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC will weaken ~50% by 2100, even for medium emissions and without Greenland melting. Seriously bad news.

Has the Atlantic overturning #AMOC shut down before?
It very likely has, e.g. during Heinrich Event 4 around 40.000 years ago, in response to ice sliding into the Atlantic the water.
Climate model simulations of this agree well with paleoclimate data.

📣 Just out: our new study on the 'cold blob' in the Northern Atlantic. Is that due to ocean currents bringing less heat there, or due to more heat being lost through the sea surface?
Our data analysis strongly suggests it's due to #AMOC slowing.

Many thanks @jrockstrom@Weather_West@PIK_Climate@UniofOxford !
Scientists and the UN are acknowledging the Paris climate treaty goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius warming is now implausible without it getting warmer and then being artificially cooled.
🚨 FACTCHECK: PIK Director @jrockstrom spoke to The @AP to counter the misinformation being spread about the scientific communities' updates to future climate scenarios.

@Peters_Glen The new van Vuuren et al 2026 paper formally retired RCP8.5/SSP5-8.5 from the upcoming IPCC AR7. Cue celebration from skeptics (including Donald Trump: "WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!") and pushback from folks who say nothing has actually changed.

The planet's current state, where we are breaching multiple planetary boundaries and which manifests as public health threats impacting millions globally, provides ample scientific evidence that climate change should be declared a public health emergency of international concern.
There is an urgent imperative for governments and civil society to understand and affirm that #ClimateChange poses an immediate and long-term threat to health, says #PECCH an expert advisory board, who wants WHO to declare a public health emergency of international concern.
