I used this photo in my presentation I gave to a Pacific Islands committee of the Japan Parliament in 2017. My presentation resulted in the inclusion of islands and maritime security in PM Abe's FOIP. A large casino resort development project was being promoted by a Chinese company in Yap. It was the same company that had approached Samoa. The development included the construction of infrastructure such as ports, airports and roads, and there were also rumours among those involved that it could be used for military purposes.
In 2019, an American female lawyer was shot dead by a local man. She was working to protect the human rights of women and children in Yap.
Those who know the history will remember that the reason for holding the Washington Naval Disarmament Conference was Yap Island, the island that linked America and Asia with telegraph cables, and the island that led to America becoming more wary of Japan.
