🎚️ Pro mastering tip.

You can use your mastering compressor in mid/side mode and gently compress only the Mid signal.

This can create some interesting space to your song. Controlling the mid while keeping sides dynamic.

Eg, you can apply it only on the chorus.

🎚️ Glueing the mix.

What is it?

Basically it's when you compress a few sounds or a whole mix together on a bus, not too hardly. Usually with certain compressors that are known for a good glue effect.

When you shape the dynamics of multiple sounds at once, you create their "common" dynamics. They start to sound more "together" rather than a bunch of sounds played simultaneously.

🎚️ Parallel compression.

• What is the difference from regular compression?
• What are the benefits?
• When to use?

Parallel compression is a technique when we send a signal to aux channel (send), compress it very hardly and blend it with dry signal.

It looks next:
Original Raw Track ➡️Bus
⬇️
➡️ Compressor ➡️➡️⬆️

Both original and compressed signal go to the same Bus and blend there.

The compressor should be set pretty hardly, very fast, with high ratio, and a lot of gain reduction.

When such a compressed signal meets the original one, you get more micro details from it and push it a bit closer, yet you don’t lose the dynamics and it’s not squashed due to original signal being present there also.

Works great on vocals and drums!

As well as any instrument that you want to sound closer, with more details.

Usually I blend compressed signal at around -15 to -20 dbfs.

1176 is one of the best compressors for this purpose. On drums it sounds like magic. From boring and weak drums you can get punchy, big and groovy ones. It’s better to hear yourself. Just try it. If you never did this trick, your life will never be the same.

🎚️ Pro vocal mixing tip.

Try setting up reverbs FIRST

Then move back to your channel, and add your compressors, EQs, etc

Why?

Without reverbs, your vocals always will sound “unfinished”, and you’ll more likely add more and more processing to make it “finished”.

And then, you still need to add reverb, delay and more effects, leaving your vocals with tons of plugins.

When you set up reverbs first, after you cleaned your vocals tho, but before working with main processing chain, you add a finishing touch to it

And can focus only on exactly needed actions that’ll compliment your vocal sound without overprocessing.

⚠️ BE AWARE, reverbs should be in the end of your chain, as sends to auxes. Setting them first doesn’t mean they will be first in the chain. You just set up the auxes, then get back to the vocal channel to add EQs, compressors, etc.

This technique is not a RIGHT technique. As most of the others. But this is a one way to approach mixing vocals. And I like it.

We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.  We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
