whenever I don’t know if a poem is working or not I ask “is this interesting” and if it’s not I add a horse, this is what MFAs mean by voice, it’s the horse you add
This.
This utter bull crap right here.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. Authors are inundated with ideas. They spill out of our ears. They keep us awake at night. But if you give twenty authors the same idea, they will give you twenty different stories.
everybody asks “how do you write novels AND have a full time job?” & they never want the answer to be “i write for an hour every night after work, saturdays & sundays from 9-5, and then i take a two-week vacation & write through that” but it’s the goddamn truth.
I cannot for the life of me understand why people think shit like this means a single goddamn thing. A book can be about Russians. Russians are people, not orcs from Mordor.
Also, special thanks to @JVSReads— it’s incredible to be able to put out a book at all, but to know you have a former student working on it behind the scenes is beautiful. It means a lot to me, Jenna. Thank you.
Also, Andy took pictures of me unboxing the books and I love them because (1) I can still see my copy of Jeremy Strong’s GQ out of the corner of my eye and (2) I’m PRETENDING I didn’t put the jersey on for the pictures, I totally did, I wanted the jersey.

Thanks especially to @ek_anderson, @JackieLeeMcLean, & @nadasurf for writing such generous blurbs (your copies will be on their way this week!), my student Everin Casey for the cover, ACTUAL @DrPhil, who is not in the book at all, & my family. Wow.

Been an absolutely wild week. If you’re someone who has said to me “I’d read a whole poems about you and an imaginary @DrPhil” (there are WAY more of you out there than is rational), today is your lucky day, because that book is out via Kelsay Books! https://t.co/LaUpCNgL2A
