I am thrilled to be recognized by @TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the field of artificial intelligence for my work with Data Workers' Inquiry.

I want to take this opportunity to share a few reflections on my work👇🧵
Next Monday, we are thrilled to welcome @alexhanna to the @JWI_Berlin for a conversation about her new book, THE AI CON: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want (https://t.co/oczJZYDmN9)

One year ago, on #LaborDay, we launched Data Workers' Inquiry. The process was messy and uncertain, but driven by the need to do research differently.
I wrote a reflection on what this first year taught us https://t.co/xZZBOJ3vZM
Thanks for reading and for supporting this work.

1/4 Exciting News!
David Hartmann et al.'s paper, "Lost in Moderation: How Commercial Content Moderation APIs Over- and Under-Moderate Group-Targeted Hate Speech and Linguistic Variations," has been accepted to CHI Conference 2025.
3/4 They conclude that using commercial APIs for content moderation risks silencing legitimate speech and failing to protect online platforms from harmful speech!
Read the preprint here: https://t.co/KCWucE01ki
2/4 This Paper evaluates five content moderation APIs. They find that all APIs have problems correctly identifying implicit hate speech - like sarcasm. At the same time, the APIs tend to misclassify content related to Black, LGBTQIA+, Jewish, and Muslim people as hate speech.
Amid the hullabaloo caused by DeepSeek, its esential that I remind you that none of these systems are truly "artificial" or "intelligent" Without human intervention, they cant distinguish a cup from a puppy. Set your calendars and hear more at the DLA launch!
Let's take care of the Internet! David Hartmann was recently featured in the "Intenet Governance Explained"-Podcast. Dive into the episode to learn more about the risks of using AI in content moderation and the working conditions of content moderators. https://t.co/skPAtNhmza
Data Labellers and annotators are literally the lifeblood of any AI systems, Machines are stupid, they don't know a tree from a cup, yet the people who enable this recognition to happen are often neglected and invisibilised. We are elated to support this initiative
The Data Labelers Association advocates for the rights, fair pay, job security, and mental and occupational health of data labelers and annotators! Join the Launch on February 13, 18h CET / 12PM ET https://t.co/LaNDA5E7pd
