The Arizona Wildcats have now lost to a team seeded at least 4 spots below them in each of their last 6 NCAA Tournament appearances.
That's the longest streak by any team since seeding began in 1979.
Say what you will about Tommy Lloyd, and some of you have, but I find it refreshing that after a loss he doesn’t dwell on what his players didn’t do right to the public. He knows about the performance of his guys. The players know about how they played. He didn’t single out players when other coaches would have to try to save face.
Tommy Lloyd is revered nationally on all the media platforms I have watched and listened to and that’s for good reason. He is a fine person first and foremost. He can recruit. His teams are fun to watch. His players have great character. They are talented. They comprise an excellent team a fan base can be proud about.
Has Arizona come up short in Lloyd’s first three years against teams in the NCAA tournament while coaching the higher seed? Yes.
But keep this in mind: Mike Krzyzewski, the most successful men’s hoops coach in history, didn’t reach the Final Four until his sixth year at Duke and didn’t win a national title until his 11th season. And this was before one-and-dones, NIL, transfer portal, social media and more player entitlement came into play. It was an entirely different college basketball world with four-year veterans dominating the rosters.
Take a deep breath, clear your mind and acknowledge what Arizona has in Tommy Lloyd. It is very good.
