Not because the potential wasn’t there. Because it was never brought out. The Gospel of Thomas, one of the Gnostic texts excluded from the canonical Bible, contains some of the most psychologically precise teachings attributed to Jesus.

This logion is among the most devastating. It does not speak of sin in the moral sense. It speaks of suppression, of the inner life left unlived, the gifts left unexpressed, the self left unborn.

Jung arrived at the same place through a different door. He called the unlived life the shadow, not only the darkness we repress, but the light we are afraid to claim.

The person who does not confront what is within them does not simply remain neutral. The unexpressed becomes corrosive. It turns inward. The calling that is ignored does not disappear; it festers into bitterness, illness, or a nameless sense that something essential has been missed.

The Hermetic tradition spoke of the inner fire , the divine intelligence seeded within each soul that seeks expression through form. Paracelsus understood that every substance contains both its medicine and its poison. What heals you and what destroys you are often the same thing, distinguished only by whether you engage with it or not. The gift withheld becomes the wound.

This is not a metaphor. It is the mechanics of the psyche. What you carry without examining does not stay still. It moves. It shapes decisions, relationships, the trajectory of a life , all without your conscious participation.

The question this logion asks is not a comfortable one. It assumes you already know what is within you. The deeper terror is that you do.
