I, Too
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day marking an important moment in American history. We join in reflecting on freedom, progress and our shared journey toward understanding and unity.
White men have always attack, black women, feminism. add this to Legacy of slavery. and Jim Crow and Nazi philosophy. and the white men and women who do it, they swear to God that they are Christians. they never truly read the Bible. because there are some of the most evil and disgusting people you could come across.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the Obama Presidential Center. Tune in now to hear our remarks along with performances by artists and changemakers from around the world who will join us here on the South Side of Chicago. https://t.co/WvFn8i3IKM
It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.
Tired of watching Black people be disrespected, mocked, and dehumanized for simply existing. Michelle Obama has spent years carrying herself with grace, intelligence, and dignity, yet people still attack her with racist and hateful insults.
This is why it’s fuck everybody who aligns themselves with people like Trump who is a racist, rapist, and pedophile!
Barack and I were so honored to have @AkunyiliCrosby create our portrait for the Obama Presidential Center. Her artistic brilliance shines through — and the way she infused such life and joy into the piece is truly extraordinary. We love it, and we think everyone who visits the Center will too!
