🇵🇱 На этой старинной гравюре — один из эпизодов жестоких карательных мер, которые царь Николай I обрушил на поляков после подавления Ноябрьского восстания 1830-1831 гг в Польше. Согласно указу царя от 22 марта 1831 г. детей мужского пола польских шляхтичей и мятежников предписывалось отдавать на военную службу в Россию. Тысячи мальчиков от 7 до 18 лет были отлучены от семей и отправлены в специальные батальоны кантонистов вглубь России, где они проходили военную подготовку.

В последующие годы система кантонистов применялась шире: в нее зачисляли детей эмигрантов, бежавших за границу после поражения восстания, и детей из бедных польских семей. Цель была не только в пополнении армии, но в разрыве семейных связей, русификации и наказании за мятеж.

Условия в батальонах кантонистов были крайне тяжелыми: высокая смертность, строгая дисциплина, принудительная русификация. Многие дети не доживали до взрослой службы. Часть из них умирала по дороге или в первые годы от болезней, голода, тяжелых условий — смертность в кантонистских батальонах была очень высокой — до 30–50%.

В польской историографии и народной памяти эта карательная мера называется "похищением детей". По разным оценкам таким образом было похищено и вывезено в Россию по меньшей мере 5000 детей разного возраста. В польских источниках говорится, что их было не менее 10 000.
