First, Rome was not Greek. A Greek-speaking Roman state does not become a Greek nation. Language, alphabet, or cultural influence does not change Roman state identity into Greek nationality.
Second, even when medieval sources use “Greek,” that does not automatically mean modern Greece. In many contexts it refers to language, church, culture, or the Eastern Roman sphere, not a modern national identity.
So the claim fails twice: Rome was not Greek, and “Greek” in medieval sources is not a blank cheque for modern Greek national ownership of Rome.
