El Faro journalists were about to return to El Salvador from a conference when they were informed that police would arrest them at the airport. Dozens of other journalists have been stalked, harassed and forced into exile in the past weeks.
“Grant me a public trial, the people deserve to know! God and truth are with me”
Ruth López, human rights advocate and one of the most important critical voices against the dictatorship, is being tried under total secrecy.
FOUR !! FOUR of my husband’s cousins were just murdered trying to reach the aid distribution centres!!
Muhammad Imad Ramadan Abdel Hadi
Khalil Ashraf Khalil Musa
Ashraf Anwar Khalil Musa
Khalil Anwar Khalil Abu Musa
All shot by the Israeli army while trying to reach the aid center in Qizan Rashwan!!! FUCK ISRAEL!!!
As students from @columbiajourn honour our fallen colleagues in Gaza, I see all the names of people who were alive a year ago.
Last year, @samaakhullar and Jude Taha organised a wall commemorating the journalists killed while covering Israel’s genocide in Gaza. We fought to keep their names up during our graduation. We counted the dead as Israel gunned them down, and painted them as terrorists.
Now, these walls of Pulitzer hall, a beacon for journalists across the globe, wouldn’t be large enough for the names of everyone who’s been killed.
It’s Mother’s Day in El Salvador. It’s also the third anniversary of the worst day in the life of a Salvadoran mother I know well. On May 10th, 2022, police took away her son. No warrant, no justification. Being a mom under a state of exception.
@Lau_Bast 100% and it's such a small team it's easy to figure out which reporter & site he's talking about.
hits harder since the news site in question is one of so fleetingly few rigorously covering gaza and palestine.
People who don’t know Bukele are (mis)reading this as him “caving” to pressure but to him it was a chance to (in his lil brain) troll the people advocating for justice by (1) staging pics of Abrego looking “too well” and (2) showing that he *could* release him but won’t.
also sorry but if you only reach out to palestinians when horrific things happen to our friends and family with a deadline of about 5 mins and an insulting budget, pls don't pat yourself on the back for "featuring our voices." i can't tell you the amount of times editors at major magazines have reached out asking for an op-ed about my trauma, but when i have a serious pitch that focuses on our people on the ground, it's crickets. not even worthy of a response from those same editors.
Interesting to see which names are missing from the Academy members' letter calling for justice for Palestinian Hamdan Ballal, who was brutally attacked by settlers—especially those in the documentary world focused on human rights. This is the least controversial stance to take.
Shai Davidai cheerleads for genocide and serially harasses/doxxes his own students, especially young women, to the point that Columbia had to bar him from campus.
Shai has actually done what Mahmoud is baselessly accused of doing. But Shai is safe because he supports Israel.
A somewhat lengthy reflection on the conversations re Hinds Hall:
I want to make this very clear, because it seems that some are trying to highjack the narrative: none of the actions at Columbia have been a “battle”, nor are we “militants”.
There are people actually putting their lives on the line for collective liberation— they are the true revolutionaries. Any narrative that structures the actions at this privileged Ivy League as “militant” is incredibly disrespectful to the real-life militants and revolutionaries. What Columbia students did was the minimum and there is always room for more.
We cannot forget that we are living in the belly of the beast, in the middle of the empire. We must center the true acts of resistance— especially from those who have been forced into it due to circumstances. No organization or student community controls the movement.
Developments re #MahmoudKhalil:
1) he will remain detained in Louisiana
2) he will have access to attorneys
3) there is no material support claim
4) Prosecuted under INA, which is a legal stretch & an explicit flex for repression, gutting of 1st amendment https://t.co/eYAITPRabw
Palestinians gather in one of the sole remaining cafes in Deir al-Balah to watch Barcelona play Brnfica.
I was there. The scenes were goosebumps with every touch of the ball by the players.
We love football, but we’re ignored.
As an alum of the Columbia Journalism School, I am extremely disappointed in how the school has responded (or rather, not responded) to this moment. I have only seen one or two faculty members doing the bare minimum (talking about free speech) and that’s about it. Embarrassing.
Our film “The Night Won’t End: Biden’s War on Gaza” won a Royal Television Society award in London last week. It means little after it emerged the RTS dropped a special recognition award for Palestinian journalists in Gaza.
My time at @Columbia was one of the most hostile places I have ever endured as a Palestinian. Palestinian, Arab, Muslim students have sounded the alarm for years.
During my orientation alone: a middle eastern correspondent boasted abt witnessing beheaded Palestinians.
