Nobody else is allowed to talk about the ball.

Lying in a hospital bed for over two months in the winter, not knowing if or how I would recover from both endocarditis and major heart surgery, it’s easy to spend a lot of spare time daydreaming, staring at the ceiling. One of the things I wondered about a lot was whether I’d ever be well enough to able to work in another cricket tournament.
Sometimes when I was ill and especially before surgery I took my recovery for granted, and the medical experts (genuine geniuses), my hero of a wife and my amazing family did well to hide quite how grave my condition was, particularly with my autoimmune issues wreaking havoc too. My cardiologists and rheumatologist have told me the truth recently about how lucky I actually have been.
So, I’m incredibly grateful to be fit & well again, and feel so lucky to be back doing what I love. Leaving Kent before the start of this year’s T20 Blast slightly delayed this process, but now I’m pretty much back to full strength here ahead of the knockouts in the fourth season in The Hundred.
I’m really excited ahead of these next few days but also know that, whatever happens, cricket doesn’t define you as a human being and that the most important things in life, as well as the biggest challenges, are away from sport.
It would be amazing to have your support over the next few days - I’m sure everyone at Phoenix will all be doing their best to entertain you 🧡
