MK Ultra Is Back in Congress, And the Questions Are Bigger Than Ever

Congress is now holding hearings on the CIA’s MK Ultra program. Experts describe experiments involving LSD, hypnosis, electroshock, sensory deprivation, and other methods designed to test whether the human mind could be controlled.

This wasn’t a foreign enemy running these programs; it was a US government agency operating in secret during the Cold War, on people who often had no idea they were part of it.

Operation Paperclip after World War II, when the US brought over 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and medical researchers into the country. Some had been Nazi Party members. Some had done research for Hitler’s war machine.

By 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms knew Congress was closing in on MK Ultra and ordered most of the files destroyed. Historians have spent decades piecing the program back together from the fragments that survived.

Expert witness and author Tom O’Neill revealed that CIA-contracted psychiatrist Dr. Louis Jolyon “Jolly” West claimed he had learned how to replace true memories with false ones in unwitting subjects — without their knowledge.

West reportedly stated it was “feasible to take the memory of a definite event… and through hypnotic suggestion, bring about the subsequent conscious recall (that) a different fictional event actually did occur.”
