Survivors faced significant barriers accessing justice, as persistent violations of human rights and sustained attacks on international justice mechanisms undermined accountability.

Through it all, LAW’s staff and partners have been working together with victims and survivors from the frontlines to the courtrooms, 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 18 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐋𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧, 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐧, 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡, 𝐌𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐫, 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚.

Together with 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐮𝐛, we provided legal support to aid workers and their families, as attacks on humanitarian have been increasing across conflicts, further endangering communities' humanitarians serve at great personal risks.

In March this year, in a landmark decision, The Department of Public Prosecutions of #SouthSudan accepted the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

⚖️ The decision of south Sudanese authorities to investigate and prosecute these crimes paves the way toward justice and accountability. A lot needs to be done. It is estimated that 70% of women and girls are subjected to sexual and gender-based violence across the country. #SGBV #CRSV

We are asking how the @UN_HRC can support South Sudan authorities to move forward with this historic decision to investigate and prosecute these crimes.

During a visit with his lawyer on Thursday, Dr. Abu Safiya bore fresh and severe injuries to his head, around his eyes, and to his ears and neck, to the extent that he was initially difficult to recognise.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained without charge for over 500 days by Israeli authorities. On 24 June 2026, his appeal to the Supreme Court of Israel challenging his continued and unlawful detention was rejected. Immediately after returning from court, five Israeli Prison Service guards entered his solitary confinement cell and severely assaulted him.

We have had no direct news of him since Thursday, 2 July. In total, 14 doctors from Gaza are being illegally detained by Israel.

We demand that:
1. Dr. Abu Safiya be urgently examined and treated by an independent medical professional.

2. International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC (ICRC) be granted full access.

3. All medical professionals held without charge be immediately released.

This week, we did something different.

Legal Action Worldwide brought seven women artists from #Sudan, #Afghanistan, #Iraq, #Iran, #Uganda and #Palestine to #Geneva for one evening of song, poetry, painting, photography and virtual reality, all of it about what it means to live through conflict as a woman.

𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐄𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢, Sudanese singer, opened and closed the night.
𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐣𝐨, young Yazidi woman, shared her painting of a 15 years old girl abducted from ISIS in Sinjar – her own story of seven years in captivity.
𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢, an Afghan photographer, asked us to see Afghan women in their beauty, not only their oppression.
𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐀𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐧, poet from Gaza read from the collection (48 Kg) she wrote to hold herself together, and named a fear too often left unspoken: the fear of rape that forced a million women from their homes.
𝐍𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐲, writer from Gaza, laid bare how the destruction of courts and ministries has stripped women of the legal protection that was supposed to be theirs, and how the world responded with reports, not action.
𝐉𝐞𝐲𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢, from Iran, danced with her mother and showed that experiences are carried across generations, and that art becomes a language of its own when others fail.

In a beautiful garden space shared by artists, diplomats, United Nations and NGOs representatives, statistics had names and faces. 𝑾𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒕. Women on the Frontline was a reminder of who that work is for.

This #CRSVDay, we share the words of Salma* — a Rohingya survivor of sexual violence committed during the 2017 genocidal "clearance operations" by the #Myanmar Military.

To ensure that what she suffered never happens again, she attended the genocide hearings at the @CIJ_ICJ in January, with the support of LAW.

Today, we mark the𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁-𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 - a reminder that these crimes remain among the most hidden in war, even as evidence grows.

The latest #UN report proves again: #CRSV is widespread and systematic. For the first time, both #Russian forces are listed for patterns of sexual violence. The UN has verified 310 cases in Ukraine and documented abuses against men, women, and children in detention contexts. And yet, these numbers are only a fraction of the reality.

Survivors of CRSV face stigma, fear, and a lack of trust in the system. Many never come forward.

⚖️ Because justice doesn’t start in court - it starts with trust and with safe spaces. LAW helps create those in Ukraine, where we organize peer-to-peer trainings on survivor-centered approached for law enforcement, investigators, lawyers, social workers and psychologists.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of #CRSV.

In #Sudan, survivors in refugee camps are getting legal support for the first time. In #Ukraine, male survivors face trauma, stigma & a system unprepared to hear them. For #Rohingya survivors, the road to the ICJ has taken years,  but they finally spoke in Court.

This week, history was made in #Damascus. For the very first time, a senior figure from the security apparatus of the former #Syrian regime stood before judges of Fourth Criminal Court to answer for crimes committed against civilians in the early days of the 2011 uprising.

Present in the courtroom, LAW Syria Programme Manager Terry Flyte witnessed describes what he saw this morning: “Atef Najib, former head of Political Security in Daraa and cousin of Bashar al‑Assad, appeared before a three‑judge panel on charges linked to arbitrary arrest, detention, and torture, including of children. When the court formally called the names of all accused, including Bashar and Maher al‑Assad, the silence that followed stressed the gravity of the moment. Najib stood alone as proceedings moved forward against others in absentia. For victims and survivors, many of whom never believed they would see this day. It signals a crack in the wall of impunity, and a first step toward justice inside #Syria itself.”

All three trial judges of the Court are currently enrolled in LAW’s specialised training on international criminal law. The programme focuses on the practical application of ICL principles, equipping judges to interpret and apply Syrian law in line with international standards, particularly in cases involving mass violence, complex modes of liability, and evidentiary challenges.

The next hearing is scheduled for 10 May.

When fighting reached Gezira, #Sudan, 15-year-old Yumna’s life changed overnight and school bells were replaced by gunfire. After fleeing to #Uganda, safety returned, but school did not.
