Unselfish behavior boosted the impression of physical beauty, even more so than appearing funny or intelligent. https://t.co/ltpilDuUTe Ten studies (N = 4192) demonstrated that individuals depicted as prosocial [e.g., volunteering at a soup kitchen or packaging food for the needy] were judged to be more physically beautiful. This evaluation of prosocial individuals as more beautiful is influenced by a motivation to be associated with prosocial others. This phenomenon was observed in real-world settings and applied to both men and women, both as targets and observers. The effect persisted in scenarios where participants imagined the target without any visual aid and extended beyond metaphorical interpretations of beauty. The effect weakened when prosocial behaviour was an isolated incident, not indicative of the target's prosocial personality. The influence of prosociality on beauty evaluations surpassed that of other positive traits such as intelligence or humour and remained significant despite physical imperfections in the target's appearance. The effect diminished in situations where forming a relationship was not feasible, thus supporting the motivated cognition rationale. Beyond prosocial individuals being viewed as more desirable cooperative partners and trustworthy group members, our findings demonstrate that prosocial acts can directly enhance how one's physical appearance is evaluated by others. In societies placing substantial emphasis on physical attractiveness, this novel insight suggests prosociality may help counteract strict appearance-based biases. At an individual level, engaging in kind and helpful acts could leverage more favourable evaluations of one's looks.
