@PowleyJacob Because of a rule SEPERATE to the standard handball rule, where the goalscorer cannot under any circumstances handle the ball. The usual handball rule accounts for things like distance from the ball and intention. It was an OG so they couldn't apply that's seperate rule

Nobody actually understands the handball from maguire. VAR looked at it, and decided it wasn't a handball. That decision has nothing to do with it being an own goal. I think that decision is horrendous in of itself, but it wasn't due to the own goal.

Goalscorers cannot touch the ball AT ALL if they then score, regardless of usual rules like distance from the ball and intention. But because Maguire didn't actually score, that rule wasn't applied.

@Stuart_Watson I imagine it was determined not to be a normal handball (which I think is still crazy). But then also, if the *goalscorer* has touched the ball with his hand AT ALL, even if it's unintentional, the goal is always disallowed regardless. Which is what they were checking.
