@HilarityjaneArt@ChristianWriti1 There’s a fresco in Santa Maria dei Servi in Siena of Mary ‘rescuing’ people from purgatory. The author Jane Tylus describes her as (atypically) smiling. I (an interested lay person) thought that was stretching it a bit but nevertheless found the painting very interesting.

@HilarityjaneArt@ChristianWriti1 Gosh, that was a prickly reply! But I’ll risk a follow up: do any ways of portraying joy other than “seriousness” appear in sacred art that nevertheless fall short of (the kind of straw man of) “grinning in holiday snaps on Tenerife”?
