Contemporary artist, people portraits, animal portraits. Wife & mum. Happy when with my family or with a brush in my hand. Love faces, especially smiley ones!
Need to get back to painting regularly. Unsure what to focus on but feel I want to practice minimal brush strokes - tricky for someone who has tended towards detail. This painting hasn’t worked out - the angle of the head is wrong but I’m posting anyway.
Not surprisingly, I’m not painting all the time. But I can’t get away from the desire to be creative. A change is as good as a rest so they say and I’ve recently discovered crochet - a very relaxing pastime. I highly recommend it.
It’s the last session of my 5 week art class and we’re going to be tackling hands. We’ll be painting on small canvas in oils and I have every confidence that we’ll have fun despite the tricky subject and that everyone will go home with a picture to be proud of.
Watch me paint 4 still life oil paintings using the traditional method of a tonal underpainting followed by many transparent glazes. This is a good exercise in colour theory and patience! Here’s my progress with the underpainting.
Take a look at these brilliant #AOTY25 submissions!

Isn’t it difficult throwing stuff away? Following an (attempted) clear out I’ve sewn together canvas scraps. Now I must resist the temptation to be too precious with them, stitching them together was an experiment so the subsequent painting over them will also be an experiment.
Been having fun with this - especially since I found my small brayer this morning. I must stop and go on to one of the others before I overwork. I can come back to it with fresh eyes in a couple of days. #dmu#dmudegreeshow#finalyear#contemporaryart#masculinity
Cracking on with this. I know it’s not finished and needs tidying up in places, but I’m leaving it for a bit and working on another one. It’s good to take a break from a painting to prevent overworking. #masculinity#contemporaryart#oilpainting#dmu#sportsmen
Very much work in progress, but these large canvases are part of my uni project ‘masculinity’. I have 3 more planned. Watch this space to see how they develop #masculinity#contemporaryart#oilpainting@jacksons_art
Thank you @AshbyArtClub for inviting me and making me feel welcome. It was lovely to meet you all and I encourage you to have fun and experiment with oils!
Tonight, we had such an interesting oil demonstration by artist @JackieWhall Jackie painted two portraits using different methods, they were completed using no under drawings, just emerged stage by stage on the canvas. Very inspiring.
