Also, the fact that first responders got exposed in such a manner indicates severe negligence. I don’t have all the details yet but there is no situation in which trained first responders should get chemical burns from ammonia.

Anhydrous ammonia tankers are one of the safest chemical transport methods. They routinely park in lots like this and have specific precautions to take as per DOT/RMP/PSM standards. These incidents are statistically an insignificant occurrence.

Airgas tanker carrying 25k lbs of anhydrous ammonia parked behind a Holiday Inn Express Wednesday night in Oklahoma. Driver went to get a room.
Faulty valve. Toxic cloud. 36+ hospitalized. 11 critical. 5 first responders with chemical burns.
This is the SECOND major NH3 incident in 7 days.
Why is a Class 8 hazmat tanker parking at a hotel?
The driver walked away from 8,500 gallons of one of the deadliest materials on the road and went to bed.
First responders found hotel guests fleeing through toxic fumes, gasping for air. A 89-year-old woman on hospice had to be evacuated. "But this is my house."
Anhydrous ammonia burns on contact. Destroys lung tissue. Displaces oxygen.

Every hazmat carrier should be reviewing parking protocols TODAY.
Every terminal should be retraining drivers on procedures.
