Been busy, but I've got a few minutes now, so let me get this out.

The other day, on the subject of blocking people online and smiling with them offline, I heard many of you endorsing it by saying, "Social media is not real life."

Social media is part of life. Call it 'real' life or whatever. It is part of life. Imagine saying a phone conversation is not a 'real' conversation, because it not had in-person.

Tell you a story.

When I was planning to go to Oxford, over a dozen years ago, I had nothing, other than God's assurance that it would happen. But how would He do it? I had no idea. Eventually, a series of miracles happened. Let me tell you just one, a social media one.

I had been away on rural missions for about a week, cut off from internet service. When I got back on a Monday night, I saw that someone had left me several messages, inbox (messenger) on Facebook. He asked for my bank account number.

This is someone I had only interacted with on Facebook. I didn't even know what he looked like, because his picture was nowhere on Facebook. The only thing I know was that this is a believer, a very mature and grounded follower of Jesus. We interacted on Christian themes on FB. I didn't have any of his contact details (no phone number, not even his email), other than his profile on Facebook. We were not friends. But then he sent me these messages asking for my account number.

I replied around midnight, to apologize for not responding days earlier, due to not having access to the internet. A few minutes later, he replied with a one-liner. Something like 'just send me your account number.' I did.

Cut a long story short, by day break, he wired me a huge some of money, in two installments. Remember, we were not friends, and I didn't have his contact information. Dazed, I ran back to Facebook messenger and appreciated him, curiously asking him what it was about.

He said, "Two weeks ago, the Lord asked me to give you this money. I didn't have it then, and I wasn't sure if I heard well. Finally, I confirmed I heard well, and the money also came." I thanked him, and told him he heard well, because I had a payment deadline that week's Friday towards my fees at Oxford. He said I should not thank him, that he was just obeying instructions.

We did a bit of Facebook correspondence before he finally gave me his number. He is now an elder brother and a mentor. Still keeps a low, coded, profile online. After that inbox incident, he has blessed me numerous times. In fact, the largest single financial gift I have gotten in my life, from a single individual, has come from him.

See, even if God wanted him to help me and he was willing to, he would have been unable to, IF I had blocked him before then. I might have thought God had good reasons for not coming through for me with my Oxford project. But, I would have been wrong.

I can tell you many more stories of that hue.

So, when you people do these things you do online and console yourselves with, "social media is not real life", I feel genuine amusement. On almost all platforms, when you mute an account, you stop seeing their activities, but you don't cut them off, and they'd not know you muted them. That way, you protect your mental health, curate what you want to see on your timeline, without notifying anyone. But, hey, it is a free world, and your life is not in anyone's hands. So, do you!

But if I may advise you, don't be so fragile and reckless on social media. Is it always wrong to block people? No! Just let it be worth it... be led. Even if you be NEPO baby. Be a Jesus baby more!
