BOOK REVIEW 📚
Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King
As one of Stephen King’s constant readers, I knew I would one day decide to enter the world of Bill Hodges. As of 2026, there have been six other books/stories that have stemmed from this novel, so it was about time I found out what all of the fuss was about.
I typically read horror and sci-fi King, but I’ve also read Billy Summers and that ended up being one of my top 10 King novels. This one didn’t quite reach those heights, but it was extremely enjoyable nonetheless.
This is a crime thriller pure and simple. But where it shines is in its protagonist, Bill Hodges, and its antagonist, Brady Hartsfield.
Det.-Ret. Bill Hodges is recently retired from the force with many accolades and cases solved. Known as the best detective on the force, he has fantastic instinct and intuition. Only one case still haunts him to this day, and that’s the case of the Mercedes Killer that plowed down a crowd of people (including a baby) who were waiting in line for a job fair at the city center. Hodges is lonely, troubled, and a touch suicidal, but one day six months after his retirement he receives a letter from the Mercedes Killer. Like a master console, he’s rebooted and back on the hunt.
I won’t tell you too much about Brady Hartsfield, but I will let you know he may be the most evil person you could imagine. He’s just a normal guy (no pennywise level threat here), but one normal guy can do a hell of a lot of damage.
Side characters like Jerome, Janey, and Holly push the story along while providing significant depth, especially considering the character growth of the neurodivergent Holly.
I’m excited to see how the trilogy continues with Finders Keepers and End of Watch. Will probably take a break after finishing the trilogy, and then explore the spin-off series centered around Holly Gibney. She really earned her take with this one.

MOVIE REVIEW: Spoiler Free
Whistle
Directed by Corin Hardy
I decided to watch this on a whim as I was scrolling through Prime Video. It looked like an interesting concept and stars Dafne Keen, who we all remember from ‘Logan’ as Wolverine’s kinda-sorta daughter, Laura. It was also cool to see Nick Frost get a role, who you may recognize from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc.
This is an obvious popcorn movie. Something you’d put on when you don’t have anything else to watch. The premise was fairly interesting, reminding me a bit of the Final Destination franchise, but with a more ghostly twist. I guess you could say death was the primary antagonist.
The secondary antagonist was kind of lame. A youth pastor who likes to sell drugs to kids was certainly a path to take.
The kill scenes were overall pretty well done. Obvious CGI, but I could see some practical effects that I appreciated. Two of the kill scenes stuck out to me; you’ll know which ones once you watch the movie.
For a movie with fairly shallow character development and a character that dresses up like the knock-off version of The Crow, I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes too much.
I’d say this was an entertaining and overall good watch if you’re looking for something. You’ll probably forget it quickly, but it’s a good way to waste some time.

@BeAfraid_Horror I think so too. J-horror does a great job with trauma, and Pet Sematary is packed with that. The more i think about it, the more ideas I think could work with it.
