We did this because Canadians expect us to do the right thing. Since elected, our government has decided to help those in authoritarian regimes and to assist in their local democratic movements to bring freedom to their people, and we will continue to do this.

Today, as your Minister of Foreign Affairs I am happy to announce our successful operation in Hong Kong to grant emergency passports to democratic freedom fighters to get them safely to Canada.

This operation was approved by my office and the then Prime Minister Onyemaobi’s office and has concluded with all agents and passport holders having successfully arrived in Canada as of last night. We thank the agents brave service in helping Hong Kongers

In response to genocide in Xingjiang, we placed CCP officials on the Maginitsky act list and thus placing sanctions on them, as well as formally recognizing it as a genocide, thus opening Canada to Uygur refugees and asylum seekers.

In Hong Kong, we allowed for Commonwealth passport holders to come to Canada and get work permits to flee the encroaching Chinese Regime.

We also allowed for pro-democracy leaders to seek asylum in Canada
