.@CanesBaseball Pitcher to Watch
LHP Jake Dorn
Southpaw Jake Dorn quietly put together an incredible 2025, posting a dazzling 1.98 ERA over 13.2 innings. He is set for a bigger role in 2026.
Armed with an effective three-pitch mix, @JacobDorn10 should earn plenty of run as a lefty out of the @CanesBaseball bullpen this spring.

Last night's Top ACC pitching performances on the Cape were highlighted by a trio of @CanesBaseball hurlers who combined for 10 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts.
Roman Anthony, #1 prospect just got called up, & that's important. Another player got called up too.
It's my former player, Brian Van Belle. His story is more important.
Perseverance isn't skill. It's will
A loss you have to accept, defeat is something you can fight off
First time I saw Brian was at an event in Ft Myers during MLK Weekend in 2015. He looked like 4 fungos taped to a bag of flour. As a matter of fact while I was watching him from behind the backstop I sneezed and it knocked him off the back of the mound causing a balk. I'm joking, but dude wasn't imposing. He got shellacked by IMG's top team and didn't break 84. At the time, we were trying to recruit players from winning teams. Brian attended Archbishop McCarthy and if you don't know Florida HS Baseball... They win.
So two weeks after he got shelled we went and watched him throw in an intrasquad because from day 1 we've never crossed anyone off for a bad performance. He was good. He showed up at our practice a week later with his Dad who was dressed in full blues, this was a good sign cuz we for sure back the blue. I walked over to him and his Dad and said, "I promise we will get you better every day." He signed with us, his only other option was Norberto Lopez who was the recruiting guy at UT Pan American in Texas. He chose to stay local.
Fast forward and we convinced him to eat like his life depended on it. Dude ate a loaf of bread a day I swear along with a jar of jelly and peanut butter.
He got better. A lot better. He was 86-88 with a hammer of a curveball and a nasty change.
I'll never forget we're at Palm Beach and Brian looked like a Major Leaguer, no one had seen him bc his development was sort of low key... This guy Mike Goldberg from Richmond comes up to me and says, "Van Belle is going to pitch in the big leagues huh?" I've never heard from Mike or seen him since, don't even know what he's doing but he called it.
The next week we went to FSW (a program I would eventually take over and build into a national power) for a road game and he blew his Tommy John ligament.
His season was over, his ascension was done. For the moment.
He rehabbed as diligently as I had ever seen anyone do it. Continued to eat.
Sat out 2017 and went and pitched summer ball 2017 in the Futures Collegiate League. Got good reports.
He showed up in Fall of 2017 and my pitching coach and I could see it immediately. This guy is ready.
I called my friend at the time Norberto Lopez, he was now the volunteer at UMiami. I said, "I promise you I have a player for you, this kid can pitch." He said, "How did he do last year?" I said, "No he didn't do... I'm just telling you, this kid can do it I bet my career."
This was before Fall started!!! JD Arteaga, now Head Coach at UMiami showed up at practice and my phone rang 20 minutes after he left and Norberto said, "Hey send him down for a visit we want him."
He signed with UM. We get into Spring, we start 20-2 and VB as we called him is killing it. He's our ace. We get to late Spring and he feels something in his shoulder... yea let's just tell it quickly they tell him he tore his labrum and he needs surgery. We lose him again.
His season was over, his ascension was done. For the moment.
Results come in and he says, "I'm not getting surgery I'm doing something different."
He chose alternative route, his exact words were, "Everyone who plays baseball has a torn labrum." Rehabs instead of surgery.
He goes to UM that Fall! Earns a weekend rotation spot. Kills it.
Comes back the next year, earns Friday night guy in ACC, #1 performer in all of college baseball.
Covid.
His season was over, his ascension was done. For the moment.
He was the #1! Draft is 5 rounds, the #2 and 3 at UM both get million dollar deals and Van Belle is left undrafted after 5 rounds as their ace!!!! You shitting me?!
Chaim Bloom and Chris Sale call him, sell him, he signs with the Sox for 20K.
He climbs the system to AAA and is one of their starters, new GM new Pitching director come in... "Brian what do you think about going back down to Ft Myers and changing your arm slot?"
Sure! But... was his season over? Was his ascension done? Maybe...
Kills it with his new angle, goes to Spring Training this year and now there is uncertainty, and let me say this... this is to be somewhat expected when you get older and organizations are wondering where you will fit. Especially when everyone wants to see how hard you can throw a plyo ball.
But VB, he perseveres. Takes the medicine he knows he doesn't need or deserve and goes and gets his ass ready to throw when his number is called!!!!
He earned his phone call!
A badass doesn't appear out of thin air! And here... now you have a bad ass wearing a Sox uniform tonight! I'm on my way to hopefully see his debut!
Perseverance often gets overlooked because it's about he you react when you are near the bottom. So many don't bounce back and keep throwing punches. My guy Brian Van Belle keeps throwing, and let scream for the 2016-2018 Broward guys right now... Gusto and now VB! We did make it fellas.
R-SO looking for a home next fall with 2 years of eligibility left. 2 Innings this weekend in Auburndale. 1 year post Tommy John 86-88 @RBillings13@Rwelsh23
