Still waiting on this wet and stormy autumn with just November to go. And please don't say "what about Storm Austen and Boelo" because one or two storms in one unsettled week does not make a stormy autumn, not even close.
US 32nd Infantry Division soldier at Buna, New Guinea, holding a captured Japanese Lewis light machine gun, circa November to December 1942.
Japan built its own version of the Lewis gun, the Type 92, mainly for the Navy and its Special Naval Landing Forces. It fired the 7.7x56mm rimmed cartridge and saw use across the Pacific.
The Battle of Buna, 19 November 1942 to 2 January 1943, was one part of the Allied offensive against the Japanese beachhead on the northern coast of Papua, alongside the battles of Gona and Sanananda. The Japanese had landed there in July 1942 to launch an overland drive along the Kokoda Track toward Port Moresby. That advance got within about 30 miles of the town before Australian forces pushed it back down the track to the coast.
