Jacques Ellul post ww2 book, Propaganda, is pretty good, but it should be updated for the algorithm age.

Here is my insight. The smarter the person is, the more they desire to know the world completely and comprehensively. So the more sources of information they seek.

The information economy, the algorithms, will sell them all the information they want. There is a financial incentive loop. The data you are consuming isn’t representative of the world, but of your own confirmation bias. It’s whatever will keep you engaged.

If you craved to see Steph Curry miss shots it will serve you that to infinity. Each missed shot really happened. Even if the algorithm never lies to you, the world it presents will not reflect reality.

The solution is to actually know less. Confirm things with personal experience, or the verified first hand experiences of people that you personally trust. Like the 200 people you would invite to your wedding. It’s fine for this to be error prone. If news is reporting X but you can’t confirm X with your peer group, it’s ok to be wrong. Because if X is really prevalent then the vast majority following the same criteria will confirm it within their own 200 trusted peer group. You might be wrong, but the majority will be right.

This is a weird paradox. If the vast majority is instead trying to get a full comprehensive world view, then the vast majority will be insatiably fed by the algorithm and will instead get a confirmation biased view of the world. If the vast majority of people instead try to know less and only trust personally verified sources then as a whole the majority view is more likely to be the actual truth.
