I always take Pele out of the equation though because his case was too peculiar

Aside from winning three FIFA World Cups, he was the first football 'global superstar' if I am not wrong

During Pele's era, most players stay put in their countries, not that there were no movement of players abroad, but it's not as rampant as we see now

Pele played for two clubs in his career, Santos of Brazil and New York Cosmos of USA

After his breakout year in 1958 where he won the World Cup as a 17 year, a lot of the big European teams, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United, came for him but he couldn't be transferred

In fact, Inter Milan offered 'one million dollar' to sign Pele, everything agreed already but the news of Pelé leaving broke out

Santos fans revolted against the management and promised to injure them if they ever sell Pele

It was more than football, it's a case of sell Pele and you will regret it

And South American ultras are crazy people, they will do what they say. Life was at stake

Santos told everyone, Pele isn't for sale and Inter Milan tore the contract paper

In 1961, the Brazilian government declared Pele as an 'official national treasure' which made him non transferable out of the country

As Pele grew, Santos deviced a plan and were doing world tour with the Santos team for friendly games

Stadiums were always filled up. Everybody wanted to see Pele

He retired at Santos but came out of retirement to sign for New York Cosmos of USA

He earned $2.7m per year for three years. He was the highest paid athlete in the world as at 1975

His first public appearance in USA, he got injured because of the crowd, he had to be carried out in the process

I believe Pele is out of the norm if he can command all these in the 50s

It's a crazy feat combined with his huge success in the game
