Ongoing conflicts continue to devastate civilians, health systems, and healthcare workers. The World Medical Association reaffirms medical neutrality and calls for the protection of healthcare personnel and facilities, as required under international humanitarian law.
WMA announces that Dr Ramin Parsa-Parsi, MD, MPH, will assume the position of Secretary General, effective 1 May 2026. The WMA also expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr Otmar Kloiber for his dedicated service as Secretary General since 2005.

Definitely, healthcare can never be a target.
In other words, healthcare and healthcare facilities must be kept out of the fighting by all parties involved in the conflict.
Health facilities and those they serve must be strictly protected under international humanitarian law. Hospitals, health professionals, and civilians are not legitimate targets in any conflict. Medical neutrality and the safety of care must be upheld without compromise.
