Today I was able to visit the office of Senator Lindsey Graham (1955–2026) to pay tribute to one of the most influential American senators of the current century.
Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina, is remembered as a staunch foreign policy hawk who advocated for an aggressive American role in the world for decades. Recently, he has been a strong supporter of American attacks on Iran and American support for Ukraine.
Graham has also visited South Africa over the years and made strong statements about the country’s foreign policy.
He has also been an unconditional supporter of Israel and an outspoken opponent of enemies of the West such as Iran, Russia, and China.
Graham visited South Africa in February 2023 as part of a Senate delegation to commemorate the 20th anniversary of PEPFAR, the US HIV/AIDS relief program. During the visit he sharply criticized South Africa for joint naval exercises with Russia and China on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
Graham supported the Trump administration's policy on South Africa in the Senate.
His staff confirmed to me last year that he was deeply frustrated with South Africa's foreign policy, the foolish case South Africa made against Israel at the ICJ, and the South African government's increasing alienation of minorities such as Afrikaners.
Graham's death creates a vacuum among Republican hawks who had close access to Trump. His legacy intensifies the tension between interventionism and isolationism in the US and the Republican Party.
Regarding South Africa, Graham was a well-informed senator who was increasingly critical of government policies, especially foreign policy. This level of criticism from several senators of the South African government is likely to continue after his death.
