9 keys to Career Advancement
Everyone wants to advance their career. Regardless of which career, it is important to feel a sense of career growth. Here are 9 keys to advancing your career:
#9 - It's not who you know, it's who knows you
Your references matter. Informal references sometimes matter the most. You never know when you are auditioning for a job. A "good word" goes a long way in career advancement. When you list your formal references, list a wide variety of references including your current supervisor. They will likely call anyway.
#8 - Don't chase congratulations
Impatience ruins more careers than anything. You can get a lot of "congratulations" for changing jobs every year, but it may be best to not worry about that, be patient, and wait for the best opportunity for you. This can be easier said than done. You want to think about where you want to end up and work backwards from there. There are no special career prizes for being the first or youngest to do something if you are unsuccessful.
#7 - Have a resume that stands out
You want to have a resume that separates you and gets you the opportunity to interview for a position you may see as career advancement. Make your resume visually impactful, interactive, and adapt it to fit the job. Always save it as a PDF and send the PDF so it looks the same to all who open it.
#6 - Interview with enthusiasm
If you do get an interview, be prepared. No one wants to hire someone with low energy and a lack of knowledge of the job and/or place. Do your homework ahead of time and come in ready to sell yourself.
#5 - Keep it professional
Professionalism matters in career advancement. You never know who will come back in your life later in your career. Always keep the boss in the loop when you are looking for other jobs, leave with dignity, and do not speak negatively on past experiences in interviews. You never know all the connections and being unprofessional rarely pays off.
#4 - Fit and timing are everything
You don't get to choose when the opportunists arise. The fit and the timing are everything on growing your career. There are some jobs that are not good jobs now for you that may be in a few years (and vice versa). Be self-aware and understand if you are a good fit and/or if it is the time for you to make a change.
#3 - Put yourself out there
You are unlikely to get promoted or grow your career if you are not working at it. You must tell what you want. Do not let it get in the way of doing a good job, but you must speak your advancement into existence at times. When you do this, some will criticize you. You will always be criticized for attempting to achieve. Send your resume, make an introduction, or talk to those who have achieved what you desire. You cannot be afraid to "put yourself out there" if you want to advance your career.
#2 - Prove them right or prove them wrong
To continue to grow in your career, you need to keep an edge that allows you to push yourself for constant improvement. Work to prove everyone right that gave you an opportunity and believed in you. Also, work to prove everyone wrong that ever passed you up for interview, did not hire you, or did not believe in you. If you seek constant improvement, you will advance your career.
#1 - Do a great job where you are now.
The absolute best thing you can do to advance your career in the future is to be great where you are now. This does not mean you cannot seek other opportunities, but NEVER let that affect your current work. You want everyone that works with you now to give glowing reviews on your work, your attitue, and your effort.
