Excited to be leading a (winning) team as a #wellbeingchampion in @UKHSA Kaido’s challenge which starts at the end of the month to encourage improvements in physical and mental health @kaidoculture 🔆🎊🛌🚴🏻♀️🧘♀️🎾🥗🍎💆🏻♀️
Just been to @TescoMiddleton where all these Calatheas are dying. Asked about them being reduced, was flat out refused and informed "customers can choose to buy full price in that conditon"..for £12?! ...wonder if they take the same approach to food... #wasteful#plantwaste
My advice:
- Enjoy every moment, take opportunities as you never know who/what might open up your world
- Look for a supportive environment - especially important when you’re first starting
- If you want to change the world, broaden your horizons! Don’t just look at academia
Great to be at this year’s careers event to current life science undergrads at @Uni_of_Essex
Cannot fathom that I started my own undergrad 10 years ago and since then have transitioned from “I only want to be in the lab” to “data science is my passion, I love working from home”
@chatabix1 I have just started listening (from the beginning) and I’m currently on 1st June 2021… (I hope the bleakness of ‘is anyone listening’ carries on 😂) I am reaching out to say I am!!

Been thinking about this recently as I’m participating in a career talk at the end of the week for my undergrad department at @Uni_of_Essex which I started in 10 years ago 😳
Can you give career advice when all you’ve done is plodded along trying to work out what to do next? 🤪
social media health messages need to give the gist in a few seconds:
Measles:
-is one of the most contagious diseases
-can be fatal or cause disability or suppress the immune system
- has no treatment
- can be prevented by vaccines
-vaccines are safe and DO NOT cause autism
@g_progesterone Yeah that is true! I think learning about creating dummy data should be one of the first things someone should learn in their coding journey to tackle this potentially?
I agree with everything in this thread, the QA process in academic (in my experience) was pretty poor in hindsight, and quite often data science work is lead by supervisors who have never written a line of code!
What’s the solution when academics already have so little time?
@g_progesterone I agree with you but I experienced some groups not wanting to share code or data externally incase ‘someone steals it” 🙄
And I think as a beginner I was absolutely mortified sharing anything so I tried not to for as long as possible which wasn’t helpful 🤦🏻♀️
Had the pleasure of attending the #fieldservice@UKHSA away day last week at @surreycricket
As a geographically diverse division, it’s lovely to see some faces in person! 🥰
The Gastrointestinal tracker was the first major project I worked on as part of the Regions Data Science team, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Congratulations to all the speakers and people who contributed a poster which made for an excellent event.
2 days at #UKHSA23 completed ✅
Delighted to have had the opportunity to attend the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds over the last 2 days, especially to see the poster I worked on in the flesh 😍 @UKHSA
