Levi Colwill have been very poor in this match, game reading, position awareness, tackles and everything. LaCroix have been the bedrock in that defense
If Chelsea can find a way to control the game for 80-90% of the entire match, they'd comfortably win the EPL this season.
That is what Xabi Alonso needs to work on.
It’s also because of our build up mechanism, we have no midfielder who can drop & progress through pressure but also Lacroix who is the CCB is not a build up CB & that limits how much we can play through teams & build from the back naturally.
Alonso’s build up pattern at Leverkusen was thé WCBs split wide, Xhaka drops to assure the build up in the first phase with Tah while Grimaldo (his build up wingback) inverts a bit to create those triangles & 3rd man combinations Xabi loves so much.
At Chelsea we haven’t seen that yet because there’s no Xhaka profile & it’s even more damming because Lacroix can’t handle build up. Acknowledging those issues is why he’s given up control.
All serious teams were dodgy in defence and really good in attack before they became title challengers.
Liverpool under klopp
City were meh in pep’s first season at the back
Arsenal nearly conceded as many as us in 22/23 and we came 12th
🚨 Thomas Tuchel on Cole Palmer after his performance against Brighton:
🗣️ “Cole made my decision very difficult. Leaving him out of the World Cup squad was not easy because I know exactly what he is capable of.
But I had to look at the season he was having. The injuries, the lack of rhythm and the competition for his position meant I had to make a decision based on what I saw at the time.
Now I watch him against Brighton, creating, fighting and playing with that confidence again, and of course I’m happy for him.
Cole doesn’t need me to tell him how good he can be. He just needs to stay fit and keep playing like this.
Maybe the decision was painful, but it was never personal.”
Goals Chelsea conceded.
Fulham 1 - straight at Bob.
Fulham 2 - straight at Bob.
Brighton 1 - Illegal throw in.
Brighton 2 - Deflected own goal via corner
Brighton 3 - 96th minute throw in when nobody cared.
5 fugazi goals. We havent conceded yet in my book of truth.
Caicedo not fit enough, James also probably not fit enough, but Enzo Fernandez doesn't want to help in our current midfield problems.
Anyone who defends this man is not a Chelsea fan, like Lampard famously once said, please support someone else, get out.
I’m seeing a lot of people upset with Xabi for starting Fofana over Josh. I’ll defend Xabi. Maybe you don’t think Josh should have started against Luton, but Xabi went with a VERY strong team in that game for a reason. He’s trying to build some momentum. I think people forget how terrible our season ended last year… The results were dire. Our guys need to learn how to win again.
Fofana had a good preseason and Josh is getting a rest, similar to Reece. Nothing to overthink.
None of the goals were as a result of his direct mistake.
We don’t expect him to keep a clean sheet every match day.
We never said he won’t concede goals.
We simply could no longer persevere with a goalkeeper who always has an everlasting affinity for howlers.
🚨João Pedro on why he swapped shirts with Morgan Rogers after Chelsea’s win over Brighton:
🗣️ Reporter: “João, we saw you go straight to Morgan Rogers at full-time. Why did you swap shirts?”
🗣️ João Pedro: “He asked me for my shirt in the last game after I scored. He told me his sister wanted it, but I completely forgot to give it to him. [laughs] I only remembered later and thought, ‘Oh no, I’ve forgotten his shirt again.’
“So today, I said I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. Immediately after the referee blew the final whistle, he walked over to me and said, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to give me the shirt now.’ He was reminding me because obviously he didn’t trust me to remember. [laughs]
“I laughed, took it off and handed it to him. He was happy, I was happy, and now his sister finally gets the shirt she wanted. Hopefully she doesn’t ask me for another one after the next game!”
