Chelsea’s biggest problem isn’t the squad anymore—it’s the culture, and Xabi Alonso knows it.
One thing Xabi Alonso said really stood out to me:
“The established players have to help the younger ones understand what this club is about.”
That tells me he already understands Chelsea’s biggest issue isn’t just tactics—it’s rebuilding the mentality that once defined this club.
For me, the Chelsea culture needs to be brought back. Too many of these lads don’t truly know what it means to be a Chelsea player. At Chelsea, talent has never been enough. You were expected to fight for the badge, compete every single day, and always put the team first.
When you think of the great Chelsea teams, you think of leaders. Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Čech, Azpilicueta… players who set the standards and made everyone around them accountable. That’s the mentality this squad has been missing.
I like that Xabi is talking about professionalism, work ethic and putting the team first before discussing trophies. Winning starts with culture, and if Chelsea get that right again, everything else becomes much easier.
Do you think culture has been Chelsea’s biggest problem over the last few years, or do you think it’s simply been a lack of quality?
