A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan.

In Nairobi today, I was honoured to welcome His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, alongside colleagues from the @IFRC and the @KenyaRedCross.

More than 307 million people across Africa experienced hunger in 2024. Together, we must move beyond managing crises and invest in durable, locally led solutions.

Through the Food Security Resilience Platform and the IFRC Pan-African Zero Hunger Initiative, we aim to help 60 million people become more resilient and food secure by 2030.

Together with His Majesty, we are committed to championing African-led solutions.

On 24 June 2026, the lives of thousands of people in Venezuela changed forever.

One month after two devastating earthquakes, more than 5,000 people have lost their lives, thousands more have been injured, and tens of thousands remain in temporary shelters.

I am proud of the Venezuelan Red Cross @CruzRojaVe volunteers and staff, supported by the @IFRC and our global network, who have been there since the very first minute.

The disaster is far from over. We have stood with affected communities since day one, and we will remain by their side throughout the long recovery ahead.

As humanitarian needs continue to grow while resources come under increasing pressure, flexible funding has never been more important.

Today's @StateDept contribution to the @IFRC will help us support National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies across multiple countries, respond to new emergencies quickly, and direct assistance where needs are most urgent. This funding will enable the IFRC to surge support to National Societies as needed, helping them meet immediate humanitarian needs.

Through the power of local action and our network of 18 million volunteers, we can reach communities quickly and effectively, often before others are able to mobilize.

Welcome to the @IFRC 2025 Annual Report.

2025 was marked by increasingly complex crises and growing challenges to humanitarian action. We also mourned the loss of 27 National Society volunteers and staff who died in service.

Yet our global network remained steadfast. Powered by 18.3 million volunteers, National Societies continued to stand with communities wherever needs emerged, often as the last consistent humanitarian presence.
Local action is not only the right approach. It is the future of effective humanitarian action.

Training. Monitoring. Equipment.

These are three essential elements to ensure the protection of healthcare workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and help stop the spread of Ebola.

As the outbreak continues, protecting healthcare workers remains a top priority. Together with @croix_rouge_rdc, the @IFRC is training frontline teams, strengthening infection prevention measures, and providing critical protective equipment.

To sustain this work and our wider response, the IFRC has launched an Emergency Appeal. Continued support is vital to help communities prevent, detect and respond to Ebola.

Millions of people are facing the devastating impact of the earthquakes in Venezuela.

On #MandelaDay, we celebrate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, whose commitment to peace, reconciliation and human dignity continues to inspire the world.

At the IFRC, we see Mandela's legacy reflected every day in the actions of millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers. Every day, they carry that spirit forward, standing alongside people facing crises and uncertainty.

Too many journeys end in silence.

I am heartbroken by the terrible news that two boats carrying more than 500 people are feared to have capsized off the coast of Myanmar.

This devastating news is a stark reminder of the urgent need for safer pathways and stronger protection for people on the move.

With at least 10,000 Rohingya estimated to have left Myanmar and Bangladesh by boat since September last year, this tragedy highlights the desperate risks people take when safe alternatives are out of reach.

I renew my call to governments to take concrete action to protect the dignity and safety of all migrants. Whether on land or at sea, migrants deserve to be safe.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC is evolving, with two additional provinces now affected.

With @IFRC support, Red Cross volunteers are mobilizing communities, sharing trusted health information, supporting safe and dignified burials, and helping people know when and where to seek care.

Heatwaves are the silent killers of the climate crisis. That's why the @IFRC leads a network-wide approach to tackling their impact.

Take Europe. Heatwaves are becoming hotter, longer and more frequent. Extreme heat is currently gripping parts of the continent and fuelling severe wildfires, with new fires breaking out across multiple locations.

In Greece, Hellenic Red Cross @greekredcross volunteers are working alongside firefighters, providing first aid, food and water to affected communities. In Spain, Red Cross teams @CruzRojaEsp have assisted more than 130 people, opened two emergency shelters and deployed psychosocial support teams.

Through the IFRC’s Extreme Heat Initiative, we are helping communities prepare for extreme temperatures and adapt to a warming world.

Acting early and investing in locally led preparedness can protect lives before extreme heat and wildfires become disasters.

When emergencies strike, every hour matters.

In Venezuela, the IFRC's Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) enabled a rapid response when people needed it most. Within 24 hours, a DREF allocation of CHF 2 million was approved, allowing critical support to reach communities without delay.

This is why the @IFRC_DREF matters. Supported by flexible, unearmarked contributions from donors, it gets funding directly to local actors before and after a crisis strikes, enabling fast, locally led humanitarian action when every moment counts.

The IFRC-DREF is a lifeline for rapid humanitarian response, helping National Societies save lives and support communities in their most difficult moments.

The @IFRC continues to scale up its Ebola response in support of the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries, providing critical resources and operational support to help contain the outbreak and protect communities.

As part of this effort, the IFRC has procured and deployed 18 vehicles dedicated to the Ebola response. Airlifted from Liège, Belgium, to Entebbe, Uganda, before continuing by road to Bunia, DRC, they will strengthen frontline response capacities where they are needed most.

As a key humanitarian logistics corridor into the DRC, Uganda continues to play a vital role in ensuring that life-saving assistance and critical resources reach affected communities quickly and efficiently.

Several of these vehicles are specifically designed for Safe and Dignified Burial (SDB) operations, a critical component of Ebola outbreak control and one of the most effective measures for preventing transmission.
