In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, the word of the day is “tradition.” Together with our friend Zahn McClarnon we honor Indigenous people around the world and the many ways they share their culture and traditions every day. #IndigenousPeoplesDay
The world has lost a giant. The Mighty Sparrow was a once-in-a-generation talent whose voice, storytelling and brilliance helped bring Calypso to the world.
My deepest condolences to his family, friends and the countless people who loved his music.
Rest in peace, Mighty Sparrow. Your music and legacy will live on forever. 🇬🇩🇹🇹🕊️
Chrystia Freeland: "This notion that Canada is hard to get along with — Canada is the only G7 country that has a trade deal with every other G7 country. So the rest of the world finds it pretty easy to do trade deals with us, and they want to do it."
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.
The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
@EdKrassen While america is failing BIGGLY, trumps new distraction from the Epstein Files is renaming Lake Ontario to Lake of America.
Maybe Canada can rename Lake Michigan to Lake Epstein?
The sheer number of lies from President Trump about Canada – growing again today – is remarkable. Just some fact checks from the last 18 months:
- Trump falsely said today that Canada's unemployment rate is "10% and rapidly rising,” though it is 6.4% (under the Canadian method that adds about a percentage point) and has been declining for three months
- Trump falsely said today that Canada does 95% of its business with the US, though 72% of Canadian exports went to the US last year
- Trump falsely said today that high Canadian agricultural tariffs have caused the entire US trade deficit with Canada, though that deficit is overwhelmingly caused by US imports of cheap Canadian crude and though something like 97% of US ag exports to Canada are tariff-free
- Trump has falsely said Canada generally doesn’t “take” US agricultural exports, though Canada is the world’s second-biggest buyer of those exports
- Trump has falsely said the Canadian public likes the idea of becoming the 51st state, which the Canadian public overwhelmingly opposes
- Trump has falsely said Canada is one of the world’s highest-tariff countries, though it is actually low in WTO global rankings
- Trump has falsely said Canada essentially doesn't have a military, though its military has fought with the US in multiple wars and its force size ranks in the upper half of NATO
- Trump has falsely said Canada hiked its dairy tariffs during the Biden administration, though they hadn’t changed since Trump’s first presidency
- Trump has falsely said the US trade deficit with Canada is “$200 billion,” though it is nowhere close
- Trump has falsely said Canada prohibits US banks, though it doesn't and though more than a dozen US banks were operating in Canada at the time he spoke
- Trump has falsely said Canada is “constantly surrounded” by Chinese and Russian ships, though that is fiction
- Trump has falsely said then-outgoing PM Trudeau was using their trade battle to run again for prime minister, though Trudeau obviously wasn’t running
David Eby: The idea that you can simultaneously attack Canadians and also benefit from what's in Canada, which the rest of the world also wants, is an absurd one. It makes no sense.
And it is reflective of this administration's entire approach to their relationship with Canada. They want to have all the benefits of a relationship with Canada, but they also want to punish Canadian workers to bully us, to tell us who we can trade with.
It is the definition of an abusive relationship.
Carney: "Last spring, I warned that America is trying to break us so they can own us. Canada is becoming stronger and less dependent on America. We are already giving ourselves more than they can take away. And we are just getting started."
Just to be clear, then. FIFA:
1) can't possibly intervene when Iran are forced to move, a referee is denied a visa, or fans are barred from the USA
2) can absolutely intervene when a decision goes against the USA that Donald Trump doesn't like
Smashing. All know where we stand
