Thread 🧵 (1/2) • A cut-off low, also known as a “DANA”, will become a potentially serious issue for Spain in the days ahead.

The Valencia area of Spain was recently in the midst of a heavy rain event, and it looks like we won’t have to wait much longer for the next threat — this time encompassing a much larger portion of the country. The system in question is already approaching the Iberian peninsula, and it’s in the early stages of getting “cut-off” from the usual and continuous eastward flow of weather systems. If it was that simple, this threat would likely be less severe. The real problem is what happens next.

Shortly after the low collapses southward into the vicinity of Spain and Portugal by the weekend, high pressure centered over the Açores will intensify its bond with high pressure to the east, specifically over Eastern Europe, ultimately trapping this system over Iberia for the days ahead. In fact, weather models agree on this locked pattern well into next week, possibly even remaining somewhat intact by the first few days of November.

So what’s the takeaway? While most of Europe enjoys the stabilizing effect of anticyclonic influence, these same systems could prove damaging or even deadly in Spain, where relentless rainfall could affect multiple regions and communities. This doesn’t even mention the flood risk which has already begun with a *separate* disturbance over France and Italy as we speak.
