To help LTELs, something new @JenineSilen and myself are doing is ENRICH groups weekly. These groups are ELs that don't get seen by us on a regular basis. These groups focus around their lowest ACCESS domain to give extra support.

In December, I love to read this book with my EL groups. My Spanish speaking students love it, because they can assist with pronouncing the Spanish words and we can talk about holiday traditions that are similar with our families.

When helping my ELs with writing, they need to focus on understanding the question/prompt and getting their ideas down, whether in Spanish or help translating into English. We try not to focus on the grammar and spelling til later.

A lot of times I forget that while teaching Tier 3 content vocabulary words, there are many cognates to the students' L1. Making those connections first may save time and then we can focus on the new words students need to know.

At my school I focus mainly on teaching grades 3-5. I use a combination of Pull Out for my newcomers and beginners as well as Push In with some of the higher level ELs. I'm really enjoying my Push In 5th grade writing block this year!

2A1 - Based on the profiles of ELs, the majority of our students (in grades 3-5) fall into either the Newcomers - Well Schooled or the Newcomers SIFE. I notice a trend based on which country they are coming from as well as their age.
