Things I’ve Learned
What I wish I knew at 18…
1. College is mostly a scam
I’m glad I went to college, because I wanted to work on Wall Street. But today, I wouldn’t waste $300,000 on it, and I wouldn’t want to work in banking. Instead, I’d load up on college credits during high school, go to a school like the University of Texas to have fun, graduate in 3 years debt-free, and travel around the world for a year.
Rules for success.
🔘Be elite at communicating and collaborating.
🔘Harness your emotions and make them work for you, not against you.
🔘Embrace your strengths and use them with confidence.
🔘Don’t be afraid of mistakes. But when you make a mistake, learn from it.
🔘Be a solver, not a complainer.
🔘Step up and do the hard, scary thing you have been avoiding.
🔘Turn off the TV and read good books.
🔘If you use social media, use it sparingly & wisely. Use it to share (and read) positive and productive ideas.
🔘Stay away from negative people (in person and online).
🔘Focus on what matters. Filter out the rest.
🔘Have an attitude of gratitude.
Leaders! Don’t avoid a necessary conversation because it makes you or the other person uncomfortable.
Discomfort is a catalyst that signals something isn’t right and someone needs to make a change.
Don’t flinch. To avoid the discomfort is to fail to lead.
People will respond to being challenged based on how much they trust you. The harder you push, the more credibility you need. You can only push people as far as the level of trust you have built with them.
Success in life is not about the events or situations you experience. Success is about how you choose to respond.
How you manage the R is the most important decision you make every day.
Don’t wish/wait for a better E.
Choose a better R.
E+R=O
