For the first time in a long time, the Incoming team reigned victorious over the Outgoing team.
A see saw game that hung in the balance till the last ten minutes when the incoming team pulled away with the win.
The most important transport corridor in Kenya is the Northern Corridor, stretching from the port of Mombasa, via the capital city of Nairobi, through the agricultural city of Nakuru and onward to the border crossing of Malaba. It's a multibillion dollar international commercial highway. In a civilised society, you would imagine that if the rest of the country lacked any roads, the Northern Corridor would be where we would invest everything. Even before you mention the regional nations that depend on this road, as far away as Kinshasa and Juba, you have to remember that at Malaba, this road enters Kenya's biggest trading partner, Uganda! Do we even need to say more?
There are people watching Luos, Kisiis, and Luhyas stuck on the road for 72 hours trying to get to the villages, and in their minds, they think these are just folks nursing a raging appetite for lake tilapia, obokima, and Western free range chicken. They don't see the legacy of tribalism in it all. In fact, the traffic gridlock between Nairobi and Nakuru is a massive show of the Tribal Industrial Complex.
The celebrated Mwai Kibaki took power and started the dualing of roads heading to his region. Thika Superhighway came up as a shiny infrastructural wonder. Uhuru continued the legacy. The massive Mau Mau Highway got its dualing rights. And Kenol to Sagana is now a smooth dual. Even the SGR, which would have made sense as a supplement to the Northern Corridor by going all the way to Malaba, inexplicably stopped just outside Uhuru's Naivasha property. In Central Kenya, there is even a perfect road connecting Othaya to Muranga, where unvaccinated cows come to chew cud, for lack of vehicular traffic. In between, the road network in the Mount Kenya West region is so reliable that you can keep picking up options; do you go via Olkalou to Nanyuki, do you take Nyeri to Nyahururu, do you get to Nakuru via Njambini?
To be fair, even during Moi, roads were built in Baringo where the only activities were he-goats competing in urinating and farmers drying maize on the tarmac. Therefore, it is not for lack of resources that the Mombasa-Malaba Corridor has never been made a dual. It is because of twisted priorities. You see, the average Kenyan leader sees this road as "hii ya kuenda Western". Not in terms of the amount of cargo on that road per day. In fact, whereas indiscipline is immediately cited when the road snarlup to the West happens, the cargo trucks on the road play 90% of the role in starting them. If the road was better, an good dual, we would not see that.
So when you see images of Kisiis, Luhyas and Luos stuck on the roads this Christmas, give the gridlock its real name; the dubious orphan of Kikuyu Privilege and Kalenjin Incompetence!
