New paper out in GCB from my postdoc last year 🌊! In a great collaborative effort, we mapped trends in key plankton lifeforms across multiple surveys around the UK coast and offshore. Check it out here: https://t.co/ENX7SmRnBV
I wrote a short piece on how businesses assessing impacts on ecosystem condition can help drive positive biodiversity outcomes on the ground- check it out! 👇
“Ecosystem-level thinking” by the private sector has real potential to drive widespread #biodiversity measurement and economic transformation 🌿🌍💸

How can we know what species & habitats are present in vast areas of unexplored ocean? Read our new paper “Filling the Data Gaps: Transferring Models from Data-Rich to Data-Poor Deep-Sea Environments to Support Sustainable Management” to find out! https://t.co/m7H9urLdBy – 🧵👇🏼:
Biodiversity is:
IPBES: The variability among living organisms. Includes variation in genetic, phenotypic, phylogenetic, & functional attributes,…changes in abundance & distribution over time & space within & among species, communities & ecosystems
Many authors: Species number
Those free open university posters you can order at the end of Attenborough documentaries were a staple of my childhood bedroom. So exciting there is now a British Isles based one! What an inspiring show #WildIsles

Completely amazing stuff from @ClareOstle! Multidecadal changes in phytoplankton abundance and composition influence the North Atlantic carbon sink 🙌🙌🙌🌍🌊
NEW PAPER OUT: We demonstrate the importance of #plankton in the exchange of #carbon from the atmosphere to the surface #ocean in the North Atlantic. #Warming is driving the changes we are seeing, with future implications likely. https://t.co/yRepI7tYeS🌊🦠🔬♨️🌅

Also speaks to the fact that 'biodiversity' is more than just species richness, and 'biodiversity loss' needs to encompass composition change and change in functional traits.
The idea that biodiversity drives ecosystem function is deeply engrained in ecology, and has been applied to agriculture. A rigorous analysis of causation vs. correlation challenges this: "there is no causal relationship found between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning."
