If someone is unloading their thoughts about a stressful situation, ask them to clarify whether they are venting or if they are looking for advice. Sometimes people just need an ear to listen to and aren’t ready to hear a difficult truth.
University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on defensive unicorn JoJo Tugler: "He's one of the greatest, nicest, best teammates. . . He picks up the dumb fouls (against TCU) and they were dumb fouls, just like I make a lot of dumb coaching decisions. And that's what they are just dumb coaching decisions. I try as hard as I can not to repeat 'em. . . I wish I could have had a tape recorder and allow people to listen to him and how apologetic he was. And how encouraging, and how he coached each member of his teammates on the bench.
"If he knew I was going down to get somebody, he'd give him last minute instructions before he went out. And somebody would come out of the game and JoJo would put his arm around him and told him he did good. Just so selfless. Such a great teammate. Such a great kid.
"JoJo is one of one."

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on his 6-foot-5 sometime power forward Chase McCarty: "Chase is kind of a weird size. That he's kind of one foot in, one foot out of the backcourt. But Chase has really improved a lot. I have to give that young man a lot of credit. He had five offensive rebounds on Saturday. . .
"Every time Chase shoots the ball, I think it's going in. But sometimes a kid that's been known strictly as a shooter keeps adding other aspects to his game. Like rebounding, the defense, how hard we play. Toughness. Sometimes your shot's different because of how you're playing. Prior to coming here, Chase didn't play a lot of defense. He certainly didn't play near as hard as he's playing now. Sometimes that takes an adjustment.
"But I have a lot of confidence in Chase. I feel good about putting him in games."
