Leave with his head held high? Been a serial loser with one of the best England squads of all time. Quality squads have carried him through every tournament. Only note able team he’s beaten at a major tournament was a poor Germany side. Sooner he fucks off the better.

If Gareth Southgate was the American president he would have to stand down after the Euros. US presidents are not allowed to serve more than two terms and Southgate has almost done his eight years so that would be that.

Southgate could be forgiven for assuming the majority of England fans want him out as soon as possible. Critics say he has tried to Make England Great Again and failed to win a trophy with some of the best players in the world so he should pack his bags and say his goodbyes.

The loudest voices in any discussion about Southgate are the ones who believe someone else could do a better job. There are lots of other voices though including ones who think Southgate has been a very good England manager and it should be up to him to decide when he wants to go.

Although the FA want him to stay, there are growing fears Southgate will quit after England fly home from this tournament. The general consensus is he will leave unless England win the Euros and even if Harry Kane lifts the Henri Delaunay trophy in Berlin on Sunday 14 July there is still a good chance he will walk away.

Southgate is only human and the constant criticism is bound to get him down. He was affected by the reaction to the 4-0 defeat to Hungary two years ago and even though he puts a brave face on it, the constant criticism must take its toll.

Some people have short memories and they forget the state the England team was in before he took over in 2016. Sure, England have not won anything under Southgate but since when have England managers been judged by how many trophies they have won? Only one England manager has ever won a major trophy and that was 58 years ago. 

Since Southgate became England manager, France, Italy and Argentina have lifted the only trophies he could have won and if England players were better at taking penalties that list would be France, England and Argentina.

Despite growing concerns about lacklustre performances, team selection and his cautious nature, Southgate's major tournament record is better than any other England manager - expect one. 

Times have changed though and such are the modern demands of the England job that Southgate has had to be more than just a manager. He has frequently been the voice of English football and an ambassador for the game. In both those roles, he has not put a foot wrong. 

In the digital media age it is almost impossible for Southgate to block out what he calls “external noise” and anyway, there is no getting away from the reaction of some fans inside stadiums. Although he bans himself from looking at social media during tournaments, he becomes aware of stories when friends message him and when he faces the media.

Every game at this Euros could now be Southgate’s final game. It could be after Switzerland on Saturday or after a semi final or final. Whenever he goes, and the FA still want him to sign a new contract, he can leave with his head held high.

In the words of President Kennedy, with Southgate it has always been “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”.
