I actually think this clip and quote from Hamilton is consistent with - and sums up - how heโs raced W2W his entire career.
He believes the car on the outside should back off when thereโs no longer any chance of keeping the position.
Historically, whenever Hamilton has been the outside car heโs either made the move stick cleanly or backed off.
Whether itโs attacking or defending.
So this mentality applies also when heโs the inside car towards the driver on the outside.
I can think of only 1 instance in 17 years where he misjudged his move on the outside and that was Spa 2022, which would suggest this approach works more often than not.
Whilst this has always been the traditional way of racing (see Alonso, Raikkonen, Vettel, Mansell, Hakkinen, Schumacher), itโs quite an old school mentality which the younger drivers donโt really seem to grasp - so when he finds himself on the inside Hamilton naturally expects the outside car to race how he/the older drivers would - gradually running them out of road towards the exit of the corner - and thinks they should back off.
