@Jackjgilz@SnarkMessier His brutal shot and lack of average foot speed hold him back so much. He’s still elite but he could be the best defenseman in the league if he were just an average shooter and skater.
@vzmercogliano Garand is actively breaking down the structure with his lack of rebound control. He causes chaos every time the puck hits him. It’s hard to defend when no one knows where the puck is going.
@NYRLouie Smits has had his own issues as well. He makes ridiculous pinches and wants no part of the offensive zone. He down right refuses to attempt to shoot or hold the puck in the offensive zone and is a black hole there. I like his speed and 1 on 1 d but he’s struggled otherwise.
@NYRLouie He’s played better in regard to his compete and board battles but with his passing and generating offense he’s pretty much looked similar to last season eye test wise.
@BroadwayHatsNYR That being said at even strength he needs to do better. I agree he’s lacking a motor and puck decisions but his centers not being able to drive offense and set him up is not doing him any favors.
@BroadwayHatsNYR He looked much better in preseason. I think the Rangers staff hasn’t figured out how to utilize him yet. Especially on the PP, he’s physically out there but he’s not part of the strategy. The Rangers haven’t had a lefty shooter since Gaborik and they don’t know how to use him.
@GeZrJSL With Smits I’m not sure what the Rangers long term goals are but right now he’s in a shutdown d role and because they totally blocked him out of the top 4, that’s where he’s gonna stay. Theres no point in prepping him for a role that doesn’t exist.
@GeZrJSL The problem with sending Smits down to play top pair in Hartford is it when he comes back up his role is completely reversed. Its the same as calling up Beaudoin who plays 1st line to then put him on the 4th line in the NHL. Its counter productive, as those roles are different.
@NYRLouie I just don’t think they’re utilizing him properly especially on the powerplay. He’s on the ice but its like he’s not actually integrated into the plans. He needs to be the last person to touch the puck because he’s the finisher.
