Zuko was only 13 years old when it happened. During a war meeting, he spoke out against a general’s plan that would have sacrificed a large number of Fire Nation soldiers just to win a battle. Ozai saw this as weakness and disrespect.
Ozai challenged him to an Agni Kai (a traditional firebending duel). Zuko didn’t want to fight his own father. He got down on his knees, bowed his head, and begged for mercy, saying something like he only had the Fire Nation’s best interests at heart and pleading for forgiveness.
Ozai didn’t show any mercy. He saw Zuko’s refusal to fight as further proof of weakness. He brutally burned the left side of Zuko’s face and then banished him, telling him he could only return if he captured the Avatar.🍿🎥🎬🍿🍿
