🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has pledged to scrap business rates for shops, cafes and hairdressers - and reduce them by 20% for pubs
It would be funded by increasing taxes on online tech giants and their British warehouses

@ZackPolanski “The bond markets need to know that there is a plan”, and that plan is taking them on/refusing to pay debt interest? Can’t imagine it’ll be easy to borrow more money/maintain the economy in those circumstances….
A bit of Andy Burnham lore that shows exactly why I rate him so highly.
I was chatting to a homeless guy who’d fallen on hard times one late evening recently. As a long shot, I messaged Burnham. Within minutes he replied and helped.
He’s genuinely one of life’s good guys.
@Zokko18 Which he’s doing because the soft left have decided he’s their best chance. He’s one of the only politicians in the country with a positive approval rating and he’s a better communicator and politician than Starmer. Given the likely outcome of 2029 otherwise I don’t care
Contract signed 🤝 between Rolls-Royce SMR and @GBNgovuk to start building our first small modular reactors.
SMRs will deliver clean, secure, homegrown energy for millions of homes and support thousands of jobs.
A major step forward in our golden age of new nuclear power.
@BritishPsycho__ @meadwaj He said that we don’t need to spend the money on debt interest and ‘it was created as an idea’. He raised a lot of the talking points.
After 14 years of austerity and a boring technocratic Labour govt, I’d love to know what unnecessary spending there is to cut. Seems unlikely.
@BritishPsycho__ @meadwaj RE borrowing- we’re already spending £106 billion a year on debt interest and debt is 97% of GDP. Can we go further?
It’s not what Polanski said in his interview on the Rest is Politics about MMT, but that’s good
I agree with strengthening ties with Europe, but trident…
@ToryWipeout I’m still (somehow) a Labour voter but your odd blend of calling Polanski an austerity backer and a Libdem is really annoying. He’s obviously not and this government is as limp as me after 11 beers. No need for this.
