Big surge in capital region employment dropped April jobless rate to 4.6% vs 4.9% in March and 6.8% in April 2021. The region added 18,000 net new jobs in April while the labour force expanded by 15,700. It's the first time job totals - 795,500 - have beat the pre-pandemic peak.

Just how different is the capital region's workforce? This @StatCan_eng chart shows nearly 46% of Ottawa employees still work from home all or part of the time — nearly 20 pct points more than in the rest of the country. Gov & white-collar professionals are well represented here.

Some of the fizz has come off residential real estate in the Ottawa Valley a.t. @OREB1 data. While yr over yr unit sales were down roughly 25% in Apr. in both the Valley and City, rural prices were up just 9% vs an ave gain of 12% in urban areas — a reversal of pandemic patterns.

Quite a range in age profiles evident in the electoral ridings in Ottawa and the surrounding Valley, courtesy of today's census tranche. Baby boomers (roughly 55 years plus) are least evident in Carleton and Nepean, which have the fastest-growing populations. @StatCan_eng
