It’s always fascinating to hear two privately educated chaps ruminate on their schooldays - but whatever they were taught at Ampleforth and Stockport Grammar, the history national curriculum in our state schools now deals extensively with the British Empire and indeed others…

🧵There’ll likely be a rush to call British public ungovernable in the wake of Starmer’s resignation. But blaming the voters is a cop out, and imo the reason for 5 PMs in 6 years is that all of them stuffed up in avoidable ways. Going through them:
The attack began near a mosque & ended with 5 people injured. Last night’s midnight bulletin on Radio 4 had the story half way down the running order and this morning’s 9 am bulletin had a 20 second read
A 36-year-old man has been arrested after a series of violent attacks across Edinburgh, appearing to target Muslims, which left five people injured.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of this statement. It’s letting everyone know that Khamenei wasn’t on board with the MOU. It’s telling Pezeshkian specifically that he’s on notice and better deliver. He’s also telling the opponents of the MOU to keep watching.
This statement will play out over time and will have significant historic consequences.
@JoeBambridge1@martin_oneill He doesn’t say anything like ‘entirely’ though. He just says he planned on automating a big chunk of work, now he can’t, so people will have to do it. Assuming it has to be done, that is obviously true.
@VincentGeloso I don’t understand why her claim is about the relative length of the vertices. Isn’t it: ‘capitalist’ systems are more likely to drop below the minimum acceptable level on social or beyond max acceptable environmental. It’s not fundamentally about relationship between the two(?)
The truth about the Uyghur and Piker bans today is the Left and Right need to choose a consistent position on the freedom to voice racial hatred or support for terror.
Either you want to be American, where there is one rule for rate hating neo-Nazis, Islamist preachers and Podcaster Leftists who call Jews “inbred” and say they support Hamas — they have a right to free speech and to visit. That is a principled view and you can manage those politics.
Or you want to be European — where free speech is a qualified right, limited by stirring up racial hatred, support for terror groups and so on. And that again is a principled view and you can manage those politics.
But you have to be consistent in your view.
You want American-style rules? Sure but that means the Right has to be willing to accept the Islamist hate preacher in order to have the Remigration activist flying in and the Left the neo-Nazi provocateur on stage in order to have the pro-Hamas Podcaster at the festival. And the truth is I don’t think most on either side genuinely do want to be principled on this.
