A Muslim teacher has just lost a discrimination case at the Employment Tribunal after alleging ‘Islamophobia’ at her school, claiming she was harassed when colleagues discussed Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses in front of her.

Her claims of harassment on grounds of race and religion were dismissed. But with the Labour government now considering the adoption of an official ‘Islamophobia’ definition, the case offers a chilling reminder of how easily such frameworks can be weaponised to censor perfectly lawful speech.

It’s certainly true that Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s Islamophobia council is developing a non-statutory version. But it wouldn’t need the force of law. Once embedded in HR policies and workplace codes of practice — particularly in public bodies — it would quickly become a powerful tool for censorship, turning casual conversations into grounds for formal grievance.
